How to Find the Right Personal Trainer for You

Set a Specific Goal

There are so many personal trainers out there to choose from and it can be hard working out which personal trainer is right for you. We recommend that you think long and hard about what you want to get out of seeing a trainer. What are your goals? Don’t be vague, pin it down. Rather than “I want to lose weight” or “I want to be able to use my arm like I did before my injury” your goals should be specific: “I want to fit into my old jeans by August” or “I want to be able to bench press 100kg without pain by June”. The more specific your goal, the better chance your trainer has of targeting the programme they choose for you. Vague ideas give vague results.

Ask for Recommendations

Secondly, try to go on recommendation and ask friends, family, colleagues or your physiotherapist. Go with results and don’t base your decision on price unless you really have no choice. Expensive does not always mean better.

Do you Have an Existing Injury?

Lastly think about your injury risk. Are you already carrying an injury that has brought you to the conclusion that you need personal training? If pain or injury exists you may require a special set of skills to rehab you without causing further injury. Not all personal trainers are rehab specialists; they do not all have the experience and training to treat an injured shoulder as effectively as just a weak or undertrained shoulder.   It may be that you need a physiotherapist or trainer that has specialised in injury rehab, so check when you chat to them.

Hopefully, with a little forethought and investigation you can find a trainer that will understand your specific goals, will target their programme towards achieving these goals and stay focused on your aims. You will feel confident that your injury is understood by a professional and monitored appropriately and you will get the results you want. Stay focused on your goals and it will be worthwhile.
