What is cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehabilitation (rehab) is a program provided by specifically trained physiotherapists to help people recovering from heart surgery, heart attacks or other heart procedures like stenting and angioplasty.  The physiotherapist will help you to increase your activity level and physical fitness in a controlled and safe way.

Is cardiac rehab necessary?

Following the procedures above it is necessary to help improve your physical fitness and health and reduce the risk of future heart problems.

How long does the cardiac rehab go on for?

The programme is designed for each individual person.  For you to become fit again can take anything between 6 weeks and 6 months.

What are cardiac rehab exercises?

The program will involve a combination of warm up exercises, stretching exercises, pulse-raising activities such as fast walking, marching on the spot and gentle cycling and then a cool down. The warm up is important to help gradually increase the load on the heart, which is much safer than suddenly doing pulse-raising activities. Your physiotherapist will help you learn ways how to monitor your exercise level using measures like pulse rate and effort scores.  This is important to stop you pushing your body too hard but also making sure you work hard enough to increase your physical fitness.
