Are deep tissue massages good for you?

Do deep tissue massages work?
When your muscles are tense they develop adhesions which specific points of pain, which are called trigger points. The massage helps to break down these adhesions and then as a result the whole muscle relaxes. This then helps to remove the pain and increase movement.
How often should you get a deep tissue massage?
How often depends on each individual person and their lifestyles. For example someone with a more stressful life, with more pain, recovering from an injury or a life that involves a lot of sport would benefit from more regular massages e.g. at least once a week. Others not suffering from stress, pain or recent injury would be looking at having massages to maintain health, which would be more likely once a month. Your therapist will be able to recommend to you how often they think you should have massages to benefit you.
Do deep tissue massages hurt?
Deep tissue massages are firmer than a therapeutic massage and when the therapist comes across a specific tension point in the muscle there is usually some discomfort. Quite often people enjoy this temporary discomfort as know that it should remove the tension point which will ultimately relieve pain and increase movement in the muscle. Massage therapists do expect you to feedback as different people like different pressures. If the massage is too firm or not firm enough just let your therapist know.
