OSTEOPOROSIS PROGRAMMES
Osteoporosis Programmes
After the age of 35 bone loss increases gradually as part of the ageing process. Having osteoporosis does not mean that your bones will break but means your bones are more susceptible to fracturing. Particular areas of the body susceptible to osteoporosis and therefore more likely to fracture are the hips, wrists and spine.
In the spine the bones can become compressed and fracture because of their reduced strength and this can lead to your posture tipping forwards. If fractures are in a number of the spine bones this can lead to losing your height and problems with indigestion and incontinence due to the pressure on the internal organs.
What is an osteoporosis programme?
An osteoporosis programme is different from just an exercise programme. The physiotherapist will assess you first taking into consideration the level of osteopenia and osteoporosis you have. They will carry out specific tests on your posture and movement, balance and strength. Then an exercise programme will be tailored to you to lower your risk of fracturing any bones, which have been affected by the osteoporosis and increase your activity level, improve posture and strength
Aims Of Our Osteoporosis Programmes
- reducing the risk of a fall
- improve balance and coordination
- improve bone condition
- reduce and control any pain
- improve muscle strength, flexibility, breathing and posture – prevent losing your height
- improve mobility
- increase confidence and wellbeing
We will carry out an extensive initial assessment measuring all the above. A programme will then be developed to address your individual needs and follow up sessions arranged in discussion with your therapist.
What is involved in an osteoporosis programme?
The program will look at working on different factors that help to build stronger bones and reduce your chance of falling and fracturing any bones. It will include postural exercises, strengthening exercises, balance exercises, stretching exercises and advise on aerobic exercise for fitness that you can do. Some exercises are not allowed and can be harmful if osteoporosis level is high and your physio can let you know about these.
