Do You Recognise the Signs of Flat Feet?
Adult flat foot, fallen arches, and tendon dysfunction… There are many names to describe common adult flat foot. Perhaps it’s something you’ve always had or something that you’ve noticed more recently.
Flat feet can be something you may have been born with, caused by trauma, faulty biomechanics or neuromuscular issues. Pregnancy and obesity can also increase the risk of flat feet and you may have started to develop pain when walking or running; not just necessarily in the foot but other joints such as knees or hips.
Here are some things to look out for if you are worried about Flat Feet:
- Is there excessive wear along the inside border of your shoe soles?
- Can you manage to stand on your tip toes (holding onto something if needs be) and is there pain when you do this?
- Can you walk on your tip toes? If you have difficulty doing this it can indicate that there may be some faulty tendons within the foot that have caused the arch to drop or stiff joints within the foot.
- Look out for any swelling, redness or heat. If you’ve tried wearing an insole and it hasn’t changed your pain or function, then it’s time to have a full biomechanical assessment to get to bottom of the problem and find the right treatment for you.
