Most Common Ski Injuries and How to Help Yourself and Others

It’s officially ski season and most of us are enjoying it thoroughly. However, as with all sports activities, it is not without its complications. A lot of us will injure ourselves this ski season. In fact, we are more likely to injure ourselves on a skiing holiday than a relaxed vacation. Don’t fear though, before you take to the slopes, arm yourself with the knowledge of the most common injuries and how to handle them.

Knee Injuries

You can’t ski without making your knees do some hard work, so it is no wonder that knee injuries are amongst the most common of ski injuries. It doesn’t take a lot to harm your knees, in fact, just overdoing it without proper breaks can put incredible strain on your knees during ski season. Losing control of your skis or snowboard and trying to recover through knees can also strain them. Swapping between cold and warm compresses and putting your feet up for a bit is usually enough to heal minor knee injuries.

Concussion

It’s all fun flying down the slopes until suddenly its not! Falls on the slopes are common and usually not too testing but a bump to the head needs investigating! If you’re an adrenaline junkie or love to practice tricks on the slopes and suffer concussion, it is crucial to get to a safe place and seek medical advice. The best way to avoid concussion is, of course, to wear a helmet and pace yourself!

Skier’s Thumb

Skier’s thumb is quite common and if you’ve been skiing for an extended period of time, you’ll recognise the feeling! Falling with a ski pole in hand and your thumb out can cause ligament damage and require treatment such as surgery for severe injury and painkillers and a cold compress for minor injury. You can avoid skier’s thumb by remaining vigilant and removing the wrist straps from your poles in close quarters.
