Women’s Health Physiotherapy focuses on all issues related to Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Our specialists can help you whether you are a woman experiencing bladder, bowel or pelvic floor concerns or if you are suffering from musculoskeletal pain during your pregnancy or as a new mum.
Common undesirable problems experienced are loss of pelvic function, back pain, sacroiliac pain, symphysis pubis pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, rectus diastasis (splitting of the abdomen) and de quervains.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not just making your pelvic floor muscles stronger but also your abdominal muscles, back muscles, diaphragm and hip muscles stronger. It also will look at your dietary habits and behavioural habits and retrain the body to allow it to work to its best form.
Due to relaxin the abdominal muscles stretch a huge amount in all different directions. The relaxin increases the collagen fiber water content found in connective tissue surrounding muscles therefore more stretch created. In a certain number of women approximately 30% the 2 rectus abdominis muscles at the front (6 pack!!!!) can separate known as diastasis recti. Commonly women will not be aware this has happened.
Women’s health physiotherapists can normally help you repair your diastais recti (separated abdominal muscles) with special core strengthening exercises – whatever you do AVOID exercises like crunches and planks, as these will actually make it worse. Surgery is only required in severe separations and your physio will advise on whether you need to have a specialist medical opinion.
